Major Disruptions in Service on Light Rail (11/18)
The MTA has announced temporary reductions in service due to a critical shortage of trains. The following reductions will be in effect beginning Saturday, November 15 until further notice.
- Northbound Light Rail service will terminate at North Avenue. Shuttle buses will provide continuing service to all Light Rail stops between North Avenue and Hunt Valley. Shuttle buses will serve bus stops marked "Light Rail Shuttle." In some cases the stop may be across the street or several blocks away. Exact change, Light Rail tickets or MTA passes are accepted on shuttle buses.
- Penn Station-Camden Station shuttle trains will not operate. Shuttle buses will provide service between Penn Station and the Mt. Royal/UB stop. Buses will serve the stop on the St. Paul Street side of Penn Station.
- South of North Avenue, trains will serve all stops, alternating between Cromwell Station/Glen Burnie and BWI Marshall Airport. Trains will operate with single cars which may result in crowded conditions during peak periods.
Navy vs. Notre Dame: Posted 11/14
The Baltimore City Department of Transportation has announced traffic and parking modifications for the Navy vs. Notre Dame game at 12 noon on Saturday, November 15 at M&T Bank Stadium. Stadium lots will open at 7 am as over 72,000 spectators are expected. Spectators are strongly encouraged to use public transit or carpool to the game.
The following traffic modifications will be in effect due to water main repairs at the West and Race Streets intersection:
- West Street will be closed between Leadenhall and Hanover Streets due to emergency water main repairs.
- Cross Street will be closed between Leadenhall and Race Streets.
- Southbound (inbound) G and H lots will use Hamburg Street, to Leadenhall Street, to West Street.
- Northbound (inbound) G and H lots will use Ostend Street, to Leadenhall Street, to West Street.
- Outbound traffic from G and H lots will be forced north and south on Leadenhall Street, to Hamburg and Ostend Streets.
Drivers should stay alert for variable message signs and special traffic enforcement officers assisting with the movement of traffic. Additionally, illegally parked vehicles will be aggressively ticketed and towed, so be sure to pay attention to posted parking restrictions.
I-83 Lane Closures: Updated 11/14
The Baltimore City Department of Transportation has announced a couple of lane closures on I-83. Lanes will be closed as follows:
- On Sunday, November 16 between 7 am and 5 pm, the two left lanes on I-83 southbound between North Avenue and Pleasant Street will be closed.
- From Monday, November 17 through Friday, November 21, the left or right lane will be closed on I-83 southbound between 10 am and 3 pm. Two lanes of traffic will remain open at all times.
Delays should be minimal, but drivers should exercise caution when traveling.
Trigen utility work on Libery Street: Posted 11/14 Trigen will begin utility work beginning Monday, November 17 on Liberty Street. They will be replacing the steam line south of Fayette Street to Marion Alley. The project will be completed in three months.
N. Charles Street Lane Closures: Posted 10/28 The Baltimore City Department of Transportation has announced temporary lane closures on N. Charles Street between Madison and North Avenues for a resurfacing and streetscape project. The lane closures will begin Thursday, October 28, 2008 and continue through Friday, November 20 from 7 am to 3 pm.
The lane closures are as follows:
- Between Mount Royal Avenue and the I-83 Bridge, the two right lanes of N. Charles Street will be closed. The two left lanes will be open to traffic.
- The right turn lane on Mount Royal Avenue will be closed from the I-83 off ramp to North Charles Street.
The University of Baltimore parking lot will remain open as usual to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Slow to moderate traffic is expected at times. Drivers should remain alert for shifts in traffic patterns.
I-295 Construction: Posted 10/24
The Maryland State Highway Administration has announced the start of construction to widen the B-W Parkway between I-695 and I-195. Construction will involve lane closing on nights and weekends, but will not be scheduled during public events like Ravens or Orioles games. Work is expected to be completed in fall 2011. Alternate routes include I-95, I-97, and US 1.
Nighttime Russell Street Lane Closures: Posted 8/13 Beginning on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 through Wednesday, January 7, 2009, northbound and southbound Russell Street between Bush and Lee Streets and between Waterview and the City line will experience shifting lane patterns and temporary lane closures from 7 pm until 5 am to allow for roadway resurfacing projects in the area. Lane closures will not affect travel into or out of the city during games at Camden Yards or M&T Bank Stadium.
Lane Closure Lombard at Charles: Posted 6/16
The northernmost (right hand) lane of Lombard Street and the easternmost lane of Charles Street (north of Lombard) are closed to accommodate construction of a garage and ground level retail space. Motorists and pedestrians should use caution in that area and stay alert for traffic changes. The closures are expected to last for one year.
Lexington Street Traffic Flow: Posted 5/13
Baltimore City has made Lexington Street one-way westbound between Howard and Eutaw streets effective immediately. Northbound traffic in the area near Lexington Market will also be affected by the placement of a crane. These changes are necessary to accommodate construction to the MTA subway stop near the market, and are expected to be in place for approximately one year.
The following detours are suggested:
- Northbound detour: Eutaw Street to right (east) on Saratoga Street, to right (south) on Liberty Street, to right (west) on Fayette Street, to right (north) on Howard Street, and back to Lexington Street.
- Southbound detour: Eutaw Street to left (east) on Baltimore Street, to left (north) on Howard Street, and back to Lexington Street.
Ongoing Construction Projects
Mercy Hospital Construction: Posted 8/29/2007 Mercy Hospital is moving forward with construction of its $400 million inpatient tower building. In the coming months, this could bring delays and lane closures around the site in the vicinity of St. Paul Place, Calvert Street, and Pleasant Street.
Last year, Mayor Sheila Dixon's Operation Orange Cone resurfaced more than 150 lane miles of Baltimore streets, including the following Downtown streets:
