Fort Avenue Bridge to close beginning Monday, Aug. 22
The Fort Avenue Bridge is scheduled to closed to through traffic on Monday, August 22, 2011 at 7:00 a.m. The $6 million reconstruction project will replace the decades-old structure and is jointly funded by the City of Baltimore and CSX. Throughout the duration of the project, pedestrian access will be maintained along one side of the bridge. Emergency service providers have developed contingency plans for serving Locust Point while the bridge is closed to traffic. MTA buses will detour via Key Highway East and Hull Street continuing to and from Fort McHenry. Motorists should be advised that parking is now restricted along Key Highway East between Woodall Street and Key Highway. Construction of the new bridge is expected to be complete in late spring of 2012. Due to the limited number of access routes into and out of the Locust Point area, an emergency alert system has been established to notify residents when a train is stopped for more than ten minutes blocking an access point. Residents will soon be able to receive notification via email alerts, voice mail or text messages.
